Hill Hall, Epping, Essex

Grade I listed Hill Hall near Epping is one of England's most important Elizabethan homes. This Scheduled Ancient Monument has now been given a new future through a unique partnership between English Heritage and the PJ Livesey Group.

Following a £2 million restoration scheme often requiring the use of original hand crafted techniques, the PJ Livesey Group were selected by English Heritage to convert the early English Renaissance style mansion into 20 apartments and cottages, each with a unique design and position. Entered from an exterior walled courtyard to the north, the mansion's inner lobby leads on to the four architecturally distinct ranges which make up the main body of the Hall and also to the landscaped central courtyard.

The Group considers Hill Hall to be the current pinnacle of its 20 year history of working with listed buildings. In addition to the unprecedented challenge posed by a Scheduled Historic Monument, a wealth of research has been required to reproduce original details such as mouldings, columns and ornate plaster work.The Great Hall itself was restored according to photographs of its previous grandeur, using materials in keeping with its history and design.
