DIDSBURY GATE NEWS UPDATE
13/01/2010

A stone masonry workshop has been set up on the Didsbury Gate site to speed up the complicated rebuilding of the Grade II listed tower and chapel that were destroyed in a gas explosion.

Salvage crews are painstakingly clearing and sorting the debris to save as much stone as possible from the former Withington Hospital building.

The developers, Trafford Park based architectural specialists P J Livesey, hope that despite the recent atrocious weather, the blast site will be cleared by early next week and believe there will be enough stone to rebuild the landmark tower back to its previous height.

P J Livesey technical director Ralph Brocklehurst, said: “We are quite confident that we will have enough salvageable stone on site to re-build. The team is doing a great job going through everything piece by piece and it is like a giant jigsaw.”

The stonemasons, Mather and Ellis of Trafford Park, have established a full masonry workshop on site and this week started work to rebuild missing sections of the front facade of the Chapel building which was damaged in the blast. It is being supported by a steel frame that was inched into place before Christmas to ensure its safety and a tower crane is also being brought in.

A planning application to rebuild the Grade II listed tower is due to be submitted to Manchester planners this week.

Residents who were already living in Didsbury Gate, have all been found alternative accommodation while work is carried out.

They include Victoria Greenough, 26, whose apartment just behind the front entrance was completely destroyed.

She said: “It was my first home of my own and had just moved the last of my possessions in and put my last pictures up when the blast happened. It was devastating and all my sentimental things have gone.

“But everyone at Liveseys has been amazing and has gone beyond everything to look after us. And I am hopeful some of my things, including my cherished teddy bear I have had since I was a child, will be found in the rubble.

“My temporary apartment is right next door to the site so I can watch it be rebuilt. I, like everyone else who bought at Didsbury Gate, wants to be back living there. I spent a long time looking for my first home and I am quite confident that it will be just as good as before.”
